Becoming by Michelle Obama is an outstanding book. As someone who isn’t very political, I only knew Michelle through what Barack wrote in his books. Becoming gave me a whole new perspective.

The memoir offers a deeply personal look at life behind the presidency, showing the human side beyond politics. It captures the challenges and sacrifices that come with public life, while also reminding you that at the center of it all was a family trying to stay grounded.

Her upbringing in Chicago is described with honesty and insight. I didn’t know much about Chicago before this book, and reading her story made me see the city in a different light. The way she describes both the promise and the struggles of her neighborhood gives you a sense of how a city can be shaped, and sometimes ruined, by politics, poverty, and neglect. You can feel that reality firsthand through her words.

What stood out to me as well was how Michelle reimagined the role of First Lady. Instead of limiting herself to ceremonial duties, she used her platform to push for meaningful initiatives around health, education, and military families. She showed that the position could be both symbolic and deeply impactful.

At the same time, the book makes clear how much harder everything was because she was a Black woman in the public eye. The scrutiny was harsher, the attacks more personal, and the criticism more relentless. She recounts the media portrayals and political hostility she faced, and yet she carried herself with a kind of stoic strength that made her all the more inspiring.

The book also highlights the moments where the Obamas chose service and social good over money and personal gain. Their decision to turn away from lucrative opportunities in favor of pursuing public service is a reminder of what true leadership looks like.

Michelle’s story is inspiring, thoughtful, and authentic. It left me eager for her next book!
